Posted November 05, 2018 05:17:38 The United States Marine Corps is preparing to open its first overseas location in Hawaii, opening a new Marine Corps base in a sprawling residential complex known as Marine Corps One, according to the Department of Defense.
The new base, known as the Marine Corps Air Station Kauai, will house about 4,000 Marines and is expected to open in the coming months.
The Marine Corps has been eyeing Hawaii as a new base site for decades and has recently expanded its presence there by adding another Marine Corps Base Hawaii and an Army base in Honolulu.
But as the Pentagon has scaled back its presence in the island nation, the Marine Corp has been struggling to find a new home for its Marines.
That has prompted some officials to question the wisdom of bringing in hundreds of thousands of additional Marines to the islands.
Last month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $1.8 billion contract to build a new marine air station in Kauai.
That contract includes a $400 million commitment for a new facility, according a release from the Corps.
That deal is for a location that is not yet operational.
It’s unclear how much work will be needed for the new Marine Air Station.
A Marine Corps spokesman declined to comment on the Marine Base Hawaii contract.
