A new year, a new military budget and a new president: It’s a new year in Washington, and so is the military.
But how much money are we spending?
To get a sense of what is actually being spent and what we are actually spending, Forbes looked at a few military-related items and then ranked them from least to most expensive.
The Navy, Air Force and Marines are spending $19.5 billion on new equipment, with the Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force spending $20 billion on equipment.
The Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard are spending the least, spending $12 billion on gear.
The most expensive items were a pair of Abrams battle tanks for the Navy, $9.8 billion, and a pair, $8.6 billion.
The Marines and Navy are the most expensive military departments, with each spending $14.5 million on new gear.
The Marines and Air National Guard are the least expensive departments, spending less than half a billion dollars on new military gear.
The Air Force is the most popular military department, with every single service branch spending more than $6.5 trillion dollars on equipment, according to the National Defense Authorization Act of 2018.
That $6 trillion figure includes everything from aircraft to missiles and ships.
